What We Do
Omo Child Foundation saves and cares for Mingi children of the Omo River region of Southwest Ethiopia, Africa. Without Omo Child, 35 children would be victims of ritual infanticide. The tribes of the Omo River live a peaceful and pastoral lifestyle. However, fear and superstition still exists, and they believing evil spirits or a "curse" is waiting to bring Ill fortune ( drought, illness, and death ) to their villages if "Mingi" children are not killed.
Tribal elders use the word "Mingi" to describe anyone, usually children, considered cursed or imperfect. Believing their presence on the land curses the tribe, they kill the Mingi children for their survival. Sadly, this is a rite that tribal elders have mandated for untold generations. Mingi children face gruesome, deadly consequences: the tribes cast them off into the wild alone or drown them in the Omo River.
Omo Child Foundation is responsible for saving and sustaining 35 children. Life at the Omo Child home is the only option for these children. If these children were returned to their villages they would most likely be killed. The Omo Child home is less than 3 years old and needs money to pay for the care, education, and housing of these rescued children.
Omo Child Foundation believes life is far more than sleeping and waking, more than merely existing. While we provide 35 rescued children with the things we all take for granted ( a home, nourishment, and education ) we also care and love them. We offer them a shoulder to lean on, a smile, respect, and dignity. We teach compassion and do all we can to ensure these rescued children's lives are truly lived.
